Data of 33000 Kannur varsity student leak online in hacking forum

In a major data leak, details of over 33,000 students of Kannur University were found on a dark web portal. While scanning dark web activities, Kochi-based private cyber security firm Technisanct found it available since November 18. It was a hacker named '3Subs' who leaked five databases of Kannur University containing 33,040 records from 2018 to 2022. The leaked data includes name, application number, email, password, Aadhaar number, phone number, admission details and pass year. The portal has 321 records from 2018, 7,060 from 2019, 9,127 from 2020, 8648 from 2021 and 7,874 from 2022.
Nandkishore Harikumar, founder and CEO of Technisect, said that he has verified the leaked data and found them to be authentic.

"We suspect that the leak happened from the candidate portal of the university. We found that the application numbers and information of the students are authentic. It could have happened because of the vulnerability of the Kannur University website. Most likely, hackers have accessed the database of the website. You have made it.
The data appeared in a forum for hackers on the dark web. There are credits available in hackers' forums that can be used to access the leaked data. This data can also be misused for cyber crimes such as phishing, identity theft, hacking and financial fraud. “It will cost only four to five cents. The data can be downloaded using credits,” said Nandkishore.
A Kannur University spokesperson said no hacking has come to their notice so far. "We have no information about any data leak or hack. We have also not received any complaint in this regard from students and others. However, we will investigate whether any such data leak has taken place."
